A Safe Place Web Design

Project Description

This PlanetCom web design project saw us reaching out to a local women's shelter that takes in abused women and their children to redesign their website. From the first glance at their old site it was quite obvious I would have my work cut out for me, as it was very old and in desperate need of updating.

A website of this nature and subject matter needs to be approached with a lot of research and sensitivity. People in need of such services are likely quite emotionally distraught and vulnerable and need to be able to access information fast and in an unobstructed, intuitive manner. The look and feel ofthe site needed to be very welcoming and friendly and a lot of emphasis and effort went in to creating and choosing imagery that was inherently positive, optimistic, and hopeful in nature.

The new design and functionality take full advantage of the Wordpress CMS and make a world of difference compared to the old site. The layout is fully responsive and features fixed top navigation, custom icons, a dynamic news/blog section, and a "Safe Exit" button for user security.

There's No Progress Without Process

Here is what one of the preliminary homepage designs looked like in the wireframing stage. The layout features a fixed left side navigation bar which I have used a surprising amount in my recent web design work.

Here is the same homepage design in colour mockup form. Full width photos with a dark purple overlay are used as an eye catching background element with muted grey and powder blue making up a friendly, clean colour combo.

This is a screenshot of another homepage design wireframe. The menu is back up to it's traditional top-of-the-page locale, freeing up the rest of the page to create this spacious, comfortable layout.

Here is the second homepage design fully fleshed out in mockup form. Purple is once again the highlight of choice, with a refeshing mint green thrown into the mix to change things up a bit.
